Museum Scheduling

& Event Information

Open House

MSVRR welcomes all persons to our monthly Open House! Come visit between the hours of 10am and 4pm on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month to see the layout animated with trains and take a tour of the museum. During Open House, paid members are allowed to operate trains freely, while guests may take control based on the guidelines we have set out here on this page.

Weekly Meeting

Every Thursday at 7pm, the MSVRR Board of Directors hosts an official meeting to discuss the status of ongoing projects, administrative duties, and to receive feedback from members as well as the interested public. If you feel that Open House is too inconvenient to discuss your matter, then feel free to come to one of our meetings and converse with the historical society affiliates.

Special Event Venue

We accommodate school field trips, birthday parties, receptions, family outings, etc. by appointment. Please see the Contact Us page to find out how to reach us. We will work with you to ensure your plan fits our constraints and provisions, mostly with respect to scheduling and the expected number of persons. All schools and grades are welcome for field trips!

National Train Day

Usually held in conjunction with the Saturday Open House in May, this annual celebration commemorates the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869. MSVRR hosts a special Open House where all guests can get free rail enthusiast gear and operate trains at the convenience of the layout, regardless of membership status!

Salinas Founders Day

A local festivity introduced by the City of Salinas, Founders' Day celebrates the early development and culture of the town over 150 years ago. Together with local community organizations, we hold special tours and an Open House for the public to engage with a central tenet of Salinas history in the spring each year.

Miscellaneous Activities

The historical society occasionally puts on fundraisers, heads to the American Tin Cannery in Pacific Grove every December for the annual Model Railroad show, and more! In the past, we worked with the city of Salinas to host First Friday art walks and dinners as well, so stay tuned for when they happen!
